Stig

Stig
Pastel on Clairfontaine Pastelmat
A Work in Progress
Copyright Laura Hardie 2012

Working on a pastel portrait of a gorgeous Border Collie called Stig. He loved and excelled at agility so this portrait is all about capturing his drive, concentration and focus.

I agonised over this drawing in one way or another for some time before I even put pastel to paper - just couldn't quite make my mind up on the composition, medium to use or background colour to go for but got there in the end, and I'm really happy with how he is progressing. Many an hour has seen me happily lost in all that fur, very therapeutic!

He's gorgeous. I know he's a Border Collie, but he looks so much like my late Australian Shepherd, Oscar- makes me pine for him :-)

It certainly is looking good so far - love the way that front paw almost pokes out of the paper!

Lovely. I like the pale blue background with his delicate coloring. The warm/cool contrast works so nicely. So, did you do your "underpainting", the value drawing, also in pastel, or did you use pencils of some kind?

Gorgeous! I'm playing around with pastels and would also like to know what you use for the under drawing. It looks like pencil, but then you'd have to remove it all before applying pastels, so I'm asssuming it's a pastel pencil?

Hi Revelle, I used pastel pencils for the under drawing on this one :)
