A Work in Progress

January and February are months I always think about drawing horses for some reason and is probably down to the fact that I’m subconsciously thinking about a certain equine exhibition that I promise myself I’ll enter work to every year. And it’s a promise I always end up breaking. I get the drawings done to what I think and hope is exhibition worthy, make note of dates in my diary, download forms, etc, but come the time for entry can never afford the framing and postage costs with other things always seeming to take priority. It’s frustrating! I have so many drawings that I need to/must get mounted and framed if I am to do all the things I want to with them – not going to get very far otherwise am I.
This is a drawing I started back in January and have been working slowly on when time permits. Only problem is I’ve now been working on it for so long that I’m struggling to stay motivated to get it finished. Think I need to put it to one side for a bit while I work on something else and can go back to it at a later date with fresh eyes.

ReplyDeletehello,
ReplyDeleteamazing again.
the little things, and the shade are great.
I can't believe it that is a drawing.
it looks like real.
what kind of pencils do you use?
greetings Dora
I am a lifelong rider and am always alarmed when equine artists fall short on equine anatomy. You hit it onthe mark. YOu could easily illustrate horse books. The line of drawing is subtle, very detailed and captures movement, not flat expression. I have been a photographer since age 11, and have worked hard to show the beauty of horses and dogs. I love the black lab. I have a lab named Norman. I also make quilts and am going to try to incorporate my best photograaphs into quilt portraits. YOu inspire me. ReplyDeleteTruly amazing Laura - a really stunning drawing - it looks finished to me?! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Dora, I use Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils - see my earlier post 'Paper and Pencils'for more info. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Rivergirl, what a lovely thing to say and I'm delighted you find my work inspiring :-)
Thank you too Karen - I've still got quite a bit to do unfortunately. Hoping that a break from it will motivate me to finish it :-)
Beautifully done. Your detail is amazing.
