Harry

Back to my colour pencils though not a lot of colours to be seen in my next portrait – lots of greys and black are the main ones being used here.

  1. I love this. What brand of color pencil are you using?

  2. Lovely to see Harry coming along. As we have a black Labrador I can appreciate how much work goes into a black coat! (Loved the last work also). Lesley

  5. Thank you all for your comments - they are much appreciated:)

Rulan, in answer to your question I am using mainly FC Polychromos pencils with a few Derwent Coloursofft and Caran d'Ache Luminance.

  6. Hi Laura. I live in New Zealand and haven't even heard of FC Polychromos or Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils. When I work in color, I use mostly Schwan Stabilo and sometime Rexel Derwent. I live 40 minutes drive away from the nearest art shop and don't have a car, but next time I get to the city I'll go and see if they have the ones you mentioned.

I love the way Harry is looking. Beautiful work.

  7. Hi Laura
    Lovely work as ever.
I was interested to hear which pencils you're using as, from memory, you used to be a huge fan of Derwent Artists I think? Is your pencil choice just for this portrait or are these the ones you now prefer?

  8. Hi Rulan, I buy mine online at Artifolk (www.artifolk.co.uk) - might be something to consider if your art shop doesn't stock them:)

  9. Hi Sue and thank you:) Your completely correct in that I am a huge Derwent Artist fan but saying this, I have noticed I am using the FC Polychromos more and more and really like them - they are slightly softer than the Derwent Artists. They have a great range of greys (both warm and cold) so when I am working on a black dog I usually turn to them. I also prefer the Polychromos black to any other brand.

That's an interesting question as to whether I prefer them to Derwent Artist as I would probably rate them the same. I like the fact the Polychromos are oil based too as their is no chance of wax bloom:)

  10. Laura, thanks for the link. It could come in handy if I can't find that brand here.
